2. Renounce Rights To Deng And Haslem

Unfortunately for Luol Deng and Udonis Haslem, someone from Miami is going to miss out. In order for Wade and Hassan Whiteside to be re-signed with Miami, some cap room is going to have to be made.

Despite the fact that only six players are under contract next season for just under $50 million, the cap holds on the remaining players push Miami up to about $104 million, $10 million above the estimated salary cap.

Whiteside is not going to sign for much less than a max contract, which is estimated to be about $21 million per year. To get back Miami into the territory of signing the center, the cap holds for Deng ($13 million) and Haslem ($5.4 million) need to be removed.

Miami would certainly choose Whiteside over these two because of age and the potential to build around him.

Deng is 31 and Haslem is 35. Compare that to Whiteside, who just turned 27, and you get the idea. Haslem might be able to sign back with Miami on a veteran minimum, but Deng is at the stage of his career where he can get one more big contract and won’t sign for less.
