Bob Pettit won the first NBA MVP award in 1956. It took nearly a decade for the award to be introduced—the NBA was founded in 1947 as the BAA—but once it was, the stars of the game were truly born and established on a national stage.

60 years later, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry made history by becoming the first ever unanimous MVP.

There have been a number of players who deserved to win the MVP award unanimously. It’d never happened before 2015-16, however, and the fact that it did is a testament to how brilliantly Curry performed.

No one held a candle to Curry in the race for MVP, and that was accurately displayed by his unanimous selection.

Curry won the scoring title and led the NBA in both steals and 3-point field goals made. He was also the best player on the team with the best record, which is an easy enough way to earn the MVP award.

Whether or not there’s another unanimous MVP in the future, Curry set a necessary precedent in 2015-16.
