3. Sign Lance Stephenson

Lance Stephenson has been a polarizing player. He became a star in Indiana before accepting a contract last season with the Charlotte Hornets, successfully shooting the team out of the playoff race.

  • After the Charlotte debacle, Stephenson took a contract this year with the Los Angeles Clippers, playing with them until February when he was traded to Memphis. In Memphis, Stephenson had a small career revival, which has helped increase his value on the free agency market.

Thanks to the trade, Stephenson went from playing just under 16 minutes a game to just over 26 a game. His other statistics also tell us this was a good move. His points improved (4.7 per game to 13.7), along with his rebounding (2.5 to 4.3) and assists (1.4 to 2.7).

When Stephenson is in tune with the rest of the team he is a volume scorer and rebounds the ball better than most shooting guards in the league.

When Stephenson is not in sync with the rest of the team he is a liability.

However, Orlando has a secret weapon when it comes to Stephenson. Signing Frank Vogel means that they have a chance to reunite the pair. Stephenson played his best basketball under Vogel and there is little reason why that would not be the case again.

With Fournier (hopefully) and Oladipo filling the starting positions that Stephenson plays, he will give Orlando lineup flexibility.

Due to the fact that he struggled so much in Charlotte and Los Angeles, Orlando should be able to pick him up cheaply, leaving more cap space for signing Horford or Noah.

Signing Stephenson would be a risk. With Vogel as head coach, that would be a risk worth taking.
