2016 NBA Mock Draft: Built On Unpredictability
6. New Orleans Pelicans – Buddy Hield (Oklahoma)
The New Orleans Pelicans had a disappointing season, but will get some needed help by adding Buddy Hield. Hield took college basketball by a storm and led his Oklahoma Sooners on a great NCAA Tournament run. His veteran leadership will translate to the Pelicans nicely.
Hield is a scorer that averaged 25.0 PPG during his senior season and had an excellent slash line of .501/.457/.880. Hield is a versatile guard that can work on or off the ball. The Pelicans will give him an opportunity to play off the ball with Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday getting plenty of touches, which will set Hield up to shoot.
Hield is a player that excels in transition. He is comfortable handling the ball on the break and can use his quickness to fill the lane.
Hield is only 6-foot-4, which makes him an undersized defender. That will give him a tough time against bigger players, but he can use his quickness to stay in front of them. He will likely be able to defend one position, unless he develops into a combo guard.
The Pelicans need scoring and Hield will give them a strong second option with Davis offensively. His defense is a big question mark and is something that he’ll have to devote himself to improving to become a great two-way player.
