A sharpshooting wing who can play above the rim is one of the most valuable commodities in the NBA. Said player must be able to either defend at a high level or create in space, but the former can be developed over time.

Wayne Selden Jr. is somewhat enigmatic, but an upside comparison of J.R. Smith should shine a light on what he brings to the table.

Selden, like Smith, is an explosive athlete who can play well above the rim and finish in traffic. He’s also an outstanding 3-point shooter who, like Smith, can take over a game and lead his team to victory.

For as hot as he can get, Selden, like Smith, is a streaky shooter who can go cold and shoot his team out of a win.

Tapping into Selden’s upside would mean developing him into a player who can be a genuine game-changer on the offensive end of the floor. The right coach could potentially help him turn into a plus defender, as well.

Selden isn’t necessarily a safe pick, but he has the upside to be a high-caliber NBA player.
