Cleveland Cavaliers

Picks Owned: None

The Cleveland Cavaliers do not hold any draft picks in this year’s draft. That doesn’t mean that they are completely out of the draft, however. The possibility of trading into the draft for the Cavs would mean giving up an asset, such as Kevin Love, if they’re going to get a first round pick.

Not holding a draft pick makes things a little unpredictable as to what Cleveland may do. Love is under contract through the 2018-19 season, but he may not be the answer for the Cavs’ title hopes. If that’s the case, he may be dealt before his contract is up and it could be as soon as this year.

If the Cavs were to trade for a first-rounder, there are several options for them to look for in a draft pick. The first would be a post player that they can use in offensive sets to round out their offensive game. The Cavs play a lot of isolation basketball, and having a big man with post moves would open up the floor and allow the Cavs to do more.

Two prospects that are projected as late first round picks, Damian Jones from Vanderbilt and North Carolina’s Brice Johnson, would provide the Cavs a player with a nice complement of post moves. Johnson’s athleticism as a forward would give the Cavs a pick-and-roll option and a solid two-way player.

There isn’t a need for the Cavs to trade into the first round, if they decide to keep Love. He is their only asset that could bring in a first round pick, unless they deal Kyrie Irving. If the Cavs do make a blockbuster trade, with their current makeup they should look to go after a big man with an offensive game.
