Phoenix Suns

Picks Owned: 4, 13, 28, 34

The Phoenix Suns endured a long, injury-laden season that resulted in trading players away at the deadline and firing their head coach. Now that Earl Watson is in place, the Suns can focus on building around Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight. The Suns are one of the five teams that hold multiple first round picks in the draft, and none are more important than their two lottery picks.

  • Phoenix has a prime opportunity to land some building blocks for the future. With the unpredictability of the draft, the Suns should be looking to build their frontcourt, but ultimately draft the best available player on their big board with the fourth pick.

If Dragan Bender is available, that is the player the Suns should select. Otherwise, they need to take a serious look at Buddy Hield and Jamal Murray. As desperately as the Suns need a forward, they will likely be able to get good one with the 13th pick.

The emergence of Devin Booker and Archie Goodwin last season may make it difficult for the Suns to consider a guard, and if Bender is off the board the Suns could also consider trading their fourth overall pick. Whether they trade back a few spots or look to acquire a veteran forward, the Suns have plenty of options.

Building the frontcourt needs to be the focus for the Suns, but not at the expense of passing up a talented guard. Having multiple picks also gives the Suns options in terms of trading players and picks away to build their frontcourt. Regardless of what other teams do ahead of the Suns’ draft picks, their main goal should be building their frontcourt up to complement their talented guards.
