Miami Heat

Picks Owned: None

The Miami Heat do not own a first round pick in this year’s draft. Most of their attention is focused on free agency with Dwyane Wade and Hassan Whiteside’s contracts expiring. Only Goran Dragic, Justise Winslow and Josh McRoberts have guaranteed contracts for the 2016-17 season, which leaves the Heat with few assets to acquire a draft pick.

It’s hard to imagine the Heat trading Winslow, who was their first round pick last year, and if McRoberts gets dealt he likely won’t yield a draft pick in return. Dragic is the only player that could possibly bring a draft pick in for the Heat.

If they do trade Dragic and get a draft pick, the Heat should look to improve their frontcourt, in case Whiteside leaves or Chris Bosh — who has had the past two seasons cut short due to blood clots, according to ESPN.com‘s Michael Wallace — is unable to return due to his health.

Trading into the late first round could lead to drafting an experienced player. Brice Johnson would be a good addition to the Heat, especially if Bosh is unable to return. Diamond Stone is a young center that could develop into a solid two-way player. Stone is a back-to-the-basket type center that uses his strength rather than athleticism to score.

The Heat have limited options to get in the draft this year. Their main focus is going to be free agency and retaining Whiteside and Wade. From there, anything can happen with the Heat with the opportunity to revamp their team.
