John Stockton — 15,806 Assists

Stockton averaged 10.51 assists per game for the third-most games in NBA history. The only player who has the chance to get anywhere near Stockton is Chris Paul. Paul, however, averages one and a half assists per game less over his career.

Paul is 11th all time with 7,688 assists, less than half of Stockton’s total.

Last year I was speaking to some people from Utah who had come to Australia to work and when we got on to the topic of basketball, I was wisely told that the Utah Jazz are still trying to find a point guard who can replicate John Stockton.

It is never going to happen.

Stockton was a once-in-a-generation player, combining for a once-in-a-lifetime partnership with Karl Malone. Malone is second all-time in scoring and can thank the court vision and sure ball handing of his unbelievable point guard for a large portion of his points.

Conversely, Stockton can thank Malone for a large portion of assists.

These two formed one of the most unlikely duo’s in the NBA but Utah was blessed to be served by arguably the best point guard of all time.
