Tyler Ulis, Kentucky Wildcats

Position: Point Guard
Age: 20 (1/5/1995)
Height, Weight, Wingspan: 5’10”, 149 pounds, 6’2″

Season Averages:

The question beckons: is size still an issue for point guards in the NBA? Boston Celtics Isaiah Thomas broke the mold, to some extent, after making the 2016 All-Star Game as a 5’9″ primary playmaker.

Without a larger sample size, however, one simply can’t help but wonder how effective Tyler Ulis will be in the NBA.

Ulis stands at 5’10” with a 6’2″ wingspan, which isn’t terrible for a point guard, but he’s only 149 pounds. For perspective, Ty Lawson was 197 pounds entering the NBA, Nate Robinson was 181, and Thomas was 186.

Perhaps even more frightening than his height is the fact that Ulis is 32 pounds lighter than any of those three players.

Ulis averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 assists to just 2.0 turnovers, which makes for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.5. Along with being an efficient playmaker, he’s a fearless shooter with legitimate 3-point range.

The question is, will general managers value Ulis’ upside over his risk? Or will they be scared away?
