Honorable Mentions

Patrick Ewing — A current assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets, the former New York Knicks legend will get his chance soon enough. It just probably won’t be for a Magic team eager to return to the playoffs, even if Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports he will earn an interview.

Jeff Hornacek — According to Berger, Hornacek is another candidate for the Magic job. He was fired from the Phoenix Suns this year for problems that were largely not his fault, but he also lost his locker room. With a young team like this, the hope is that Hornacek would be able to duplicate the success he enjoyed in his first season with that bunch of young misfits that won 48 games.

James Borrego — You might remember Borrego as the assistant/interim head coach who took over for the Magic last season when Jacque Vaughn was fired. Borrego posted a 10-20 record as the interim head coach in Orlando, but joined the Spurs as an assistant for the 2015-16 season when he was not given the full title.

Kevin McHale — McHale has proven he can take a capable roster deep in the playoffs, and he was unfairly fired by the Houston Rockets after only 11 games this season. His name hasn’t really come up in this conversation, however.
