Indiana Pacers: Which Free Agents Should Stay?
Glenn Robinson III
Robinson is actually under contract until 2017-18, but his non-guaranteed contract makes him easy to waive if the Pacers want to open up an additional roster spot.
With Robinson and Whittington, the Pacers will have 11 players under contract going into 2016-17. If the Pacers keep their draft pick, that number will go to 12, even if they let their second round pick go or draft a player who will play overseas next season.
Robinson is owed $980,000 for next season if the Pacers retain him.
Robinson III turned 22 in January and is still younger than many collegiate upperclassmen who will be entering the draft.
In 45 games last season, Robinson averaged 3.8 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 43 percent from the field and 37.8 percent on three pointers.
Robinson III possesses potential and has shown flashes of great athletic ability and three-point marksmanship in his brief moments of playing time.
Keep or Let Go?
Keep. Robinson III could be a rotation-worthy wing player next year and could be a downright bargain by the time 2017-18 comes around. With the salary cap expected to jump to around $90 million, Robinson III is worth keeping around at his price tag.
Shayne Whittington
Whittington saw even less than a role in 2015-16 than he did in 2014-15 when he appeared in 20 games for the Pacers.
Whittington appeared in only seven games last season, but played 40 games for the Pacers’ D-League affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Whittington was signed by the Pacers as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2014 with hopes that he’d develop into a stretch power forward, but has shot only 31 percent from deep in the D-League.
Keep or Let Go?
Let go. At age 25, Whittington doesn’t have the long-term potential that Robinson III has. That roster spot could be used to acquire a younger player with better long-term potential or on a veteran who can help now.
