Memphis Grizzlies: 5 Best Candidates to Replace Dave Joerger
3. David Blatt
Contrary to what his Cleveland Cavaliers tenure may have suggested, David Blatt is regarded by those within the coaching world as one of the most adaptable candidates available. A legend of European basketball, Blatt has won at every level—and he’s done with a number of different teams.
For the Memphis Grizzlies, it’d be silly to not at least consider Blatt for the job.
In his first season in Cleveland, Blatt led the Cavaliers to a record of 53-29 and an NBA Finals appearance. In Year 2, Blatt had the team off to a 30-11 start, which was good for the No. 1 record in the Eastern Conference.
Cleveland unceremoniously fired Blatt and immediately promoted Tyronn Lue to a full-time position as head coach.
Before coming to the NBA, Blatt made his name as one of the best coaches in the world. He won the 2014 Euroleague championship with Maccabi Tel Aviv, led Russia to an Olympic bronze medal, and showcased an ability to maximize the contributions of both perimeter and interior players.
If Memphis loads up on shooters and slashers, and keeps Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph at the top of the key, Blatt can successfully run an adaptation of the Princeton Offense in Memphis.
