NBA: 25 Worst Individual Seasons Of The 3-Point Era
By Phil Watson
David Wingate was being looked upon to take on a bigger role in his second season with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1987-88 after a solid rookie campaign primarily as a reserve.
But things didn’t go according to plan. There was an injury, there was production that stayed the same or got worse and there was the whole “couldn’t throw a rock in a lake if he was standing in a boat” shooting.
Wingate started 22 games, played in 61 and the Sixers lost 46 games, missing the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.

Wingate, a second-round pick out of Georgetown in the 1986 NBA Draft, bounced back to have a journeyman’s career, lasting 15 seasons—three in Philadelphia, two with the San Antonio Spurs, one with the Washington Bullets, three with the Charlotte Hornets, three with the Seattle SuperSonics, two with the New York Knicks and a final year back in Seattle before retiring in 2001.
