Kevin Duckworth’s game had been in decline for a couple of seasons when the Washington Bullets acquired him in a draft-night trade in June 1993, but there was hope he could recapture the form that led him to two All-Star appearances with the Portland Trail Blazers.

But the 29-year-old flopped, starting 52 games, struggling on the offensive and defensive ends and providing little in the middle for a team that only marginally improved from 22 victories to 24 in 1993-94.

Duckworth had been a second-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1986 NBA Draft and was traded to Portland early in his rookie season.

He was an All-Star with the Blazers in 1989 and 1991 and helped them to a pair of NBA Finals appearances.

Duckworth spent one more injury-shortened season in Washington before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in October 1995. He appeared in only eight games and played another injury-plagued season for the Los Angeles Clippers before retiring in 1997.

Duckworth died Aug. 25, 2008, in Gleneden Beach, Ore., from congestive heart failure. He was only 44 years old.
