The Detroit Pistons suffered a tough 106-101 loss at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal. The Pistons have to be discouraged after the loss, especially when they entered the fourth quarter with a two-point lead.

The NBA playoffs were ruled by blowouts through the first game of each series. This postseason is the first time in NBA playoffs history that four teams have won their opening round game by 25 points or more, according to ESPN Stats & Info. It must be encouraging for the Pistons to only drop their opener by five.

However, that isn’t a consolation for a team that beat the Cleveland 3-1 during the regular season, including winning a game at QuickenLoans Arena. It would be easy to make excuses for a young team, but that’s not head coach Stan Van Gundy’s style.

Van Gundy stole the show after the first quarter by criticizing the officiating, specifically with LeBron James. Van Gundy acknowledged after the game that the calls evened out, according to Rod Beard of the Detroit News. In a game where foul calls were pretty even (21-18 Detroit), officiating is not to blame for a Cavs win or Pistons loss.
