Conclusion: Say No Go

In any corporate culture, talent is the target but at the end of the day, it comes down to whether someone does or does not fit.

Durant still has a lot to give to the game, but he won’t fit with the Spurs. He needs to be The Man, and he needs to be on a legitimate championship team. He should probably look westward, or maybe think about Boston. The “one team” mentality won’t sit well with Durant over the long run.

The Spurs have a tendency to not chase marquee names; Aldridge was the first time in the team’s franchise history (the verdict’s still out on that deal though, to his credit, Aldridge is showing signs of progress).

Now perhaps Hawn Holt, as she gets further into her co-CEO role, will choose to take the Spurs down a more glitz-laden road for the future. She’s know for her curation of the artwork in the AT&T Center, so curating the makeup of the team may not be much of a stretch.

In this case, the Spurs may morph more into what other teams look like on the surface: flash and sass, and highlight reel darlings.

We’ll see.

There are still a few rounds of the NBA playoffs to get through, so we’ll have to wait to see how all of this shakes out. By the time July 1 rolls around, there may be another headline dominating media, and Durant may be able to focus on his free agency decision in relative peace.

Hawn Holt may have her eye on another player that is more conducive to the Spurs culture, a culture in which she had a hand in fostering.
