At No. 3 overall, the Phoenix Suns found an upside player at small forward in California Golden Bears star Jaylen Brown. It’s understandable for some to want an immediate impact at No. 13, but the Suns should again value potential with a second lottery pick.
With a need for a power forward who can block shots and get out in transition, Phoenix selects Deyonta Davis at No. 13 overall.
Davis is still very raw, but he has intriguing physical gifts at 6’10” with a 7’2″ wingspan and the leaping ability to contest any shot that comes his way. He’s already an excellent shot-blocker, averaging 1.9 blocks per game in just 18.7 minutes of action.
That translates to 3.7 blocks per 36 minutes.
If Phoenix can develop Davis as the long-term answer at power forward, it can become a more viable contender. The likes of Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight provide immediate value at the guard spots, and Brown could be a star, but Phoenix desperately needs a rim protector.
At this current point in time, there’s no better move for Phoenix at No. 13 than drafting Davis.
