Kevin McHale

Teams Coached: Minnesota Timberwolves (2005, 2008-09), Houston Rockets (2011-15)
Career Record: 232-185 (.556)
Postseason(s) and Record: 3 appearances, 13-16 (.448)

Kevin McHale has had three different coaching stints in his career. Two were on an interim basis with the Timberwolves and most recently he was with the Rockets. McHale served as the Wolves president of basketball operations and took over as coach on two separate occasions after firing head coaches.

McHale, 58, led the Rockets to three straight playoff appearances after missing the playoffs in his first season as head coach. The Rockets fired McHale after a disappointing 4-7 start to this season.

GM Daryl Morey explained in a post on Quora.com that the Rockets couldn’t afford to fall behind “and still reach our goals for the season.” He also referred to McHale as an “amazing coach” and said that some team will get “one hell of a coach”.

McHale has been tabbed as one of the candidates for the Kings head coaching position by ESPN’s Marc Stein. It likely won’t be a long delay for McHale to return to the coaching realm, but he was featured on TNT’s broadcast of Game 1 between the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers, and his color commentary was enjoyable to most. He may have a career there if he so chooses.
