You may wonder how a 6’0″ point guard can have such a big impact on the game in today’s NBA. In that case, take a look at J.J. Barea.
Serving as one of the shortest players in the NBA today, the Puerto Rican has been huge for the Mavs ever since he was signed back for the 2014-15 season. Even though he’s been the best sixth man for the Mavs this year, he’s also had quality games as a starter.
However, focusing on his performance in general, Barea helped the Mavs win some huge games down the stretch this season, as he scored at least 21 points a game from Mar. 30 to Apr. 6 as the Mavs got closer and closer to securing a playoff spot.
Though the Mavs sometimes went with Raymond Felton, it was often Barea that got the start whenever Deron Williams was out, simply because of how hard he plays night in and night out. There was one point in the season where the two guards shared minutes due to a shortage of healthy point guards.
Though Barea’s role was not established at the beginning of the season, he found a way to overcome his struggles and make a positive impact on the team’s success.
Best Game: Barea’s 32-point effort on Dec. 23 against the Brooklyn Nets was easily his best of the season as the Mavs captured a 119-118 win.
