Key Strengths

  • Athleticism. Can stay in front of small forwards. Finishes above the rim. Great second jump.
  • Elite shot-blocker. 3.9 blocks per 40 minutes. Leaping ability, instincts, and wingspan to alter and redirect.
  • Offensive rebounding. 4.5 per 40 minutes. Willing to be physical to gain good position.
  • Pick-and-roll defense.
  • Offensive upside. Passes well out of the post. Has a respectable jump hook. Ideal pick-and-roll dive man.

Key Weaknesses

  • Offensive fundamentals. Post play and shooting form must improve.
  • Isolation offense. Doesn’t create much for himself.
  • Must bulk up. Can be overpowered down low.
  • Defensive rebounding.

Analysis

Michigan State Spartans power forward Deyonta Davis is an upside player with a team-first mentality. That’s a very tough combination to find, despite the rational belief that it’s omnipresent on the collegiate front.

With a solid offensive foundation and upside abound, Davis has managed to crack the Top 15 on many draft boards.

Davis is already an excellent shot-blocker, using his tantalizing combination of size, length, and explosiveness to contest shots at the rim. He’s raw offensively, but has a good foundation as a willing passer with a decent jump hook and a strong presence on the boards.

Davis would be a wise selection for any number of teams, but one can’t help but wonder which team would be his best fit.
