Key Strengths
- Natural bounce. Explosive leaping ability. Plays above the rim.
- 3-point shooting. Can space the floor with a high and quick release.
- Great size for a 2 at 6’7″. Athleticism matches that of players much shorter than he.
- Selfless. Is willing to sacrifice a good look for a great one.
- Already has extensive professional experience at 18.
Key Weaknesses
- Thin body. Has an ideal frame, but needs to fill it out with muscle.
- Defensive play. Has potential, but needs to improve footwork and anticipation.
- More of a straight-line finisher than a shot creator. Needs to improve his ball-handling.
- Scoring against length.
Analysis
Furkan Korkmaz is somewhat enigmatic, but I’m very high on his upside—and it’s about more than just his size and athleticism. Korkmaz seems to have a genuine understanding of the game, which is something that not all players are able to say.
Coupled with his explosiveness and 6’7″ size, Korkmaz could be one of the true steals of the 2016 NBA Draft.
Korkmaz needs to drastically improve his ball-handling and add muscle to his frame. Both of those weaknesses are significant enough to eradicate his immediate value, but his athleticism, shooting form, and 3-point range are intriguing enough to warrant consideration as a lottery pick.
Korkmaz is essentially this year’s Mario Hezonja: immense upside with a long-term projection and NBA-grade athleticism and shooting touch.
