13. Timothe Luwawu, Mega Leks

Position: Guard/Forward

Age: 20 (5/9/1995)

Height, Weight, Wingspan: 6’7″, 205 pounds, 6’11”

Slash Line: .398/.372/.690

Key Strengths

  • Physical profile. Size, frame, and length to play both the 2 and 3 in the NBA.
  • Elite athlete. Plays above the rim. Paralyzing quickness. Blows by defenders.
  • Court vision. Is developing as a facilitator.
  • Improved shooter with legitimate 3-point range. Lethal as a catch-and-shoot marksman.
  • All-Defensive Team potential.

Key Weaknesses

  • Finishing against length.
  • Dribble penetration. Can hit an opening, but lacks the necessary creativity as a ball-handler.
  • Prefers his jump shot to driving to the basket. Should better utilize his athletic gifts.
  • Forces the issue and plays out of control.

Analysis

Timothe Luwawu is drawing rave reviews in NBA Draft circles, and it’s becoming easier by the day to see why. He has the physical profile of an NBA wing, the offensive versatility of fellow Frenchman Nicolas Batum, and immense defensive potential.

There is no guaranteeing success when one attempts to transfer from the European scene to the NBA, but Luwawu is a tantalizing prospect.

Luwawu isn’t limited by any true weakness, but instead an approach to the game that may not be conducive to achieving his full potential. Much like a pre-2015-16 DeMar DeRozan, Luwawu settles for jump shots instead of using his athletic advantage over the opposition to create penetration.

Luwawu has as much upside as any wing in this draft class, and that could make him a Top 10 pick come June 25.
