Detlef Schrempf had come to the U.S. as a high school senior and became a star at Washington before he was selected eighth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1985 NBA Draft.

Schrempf was a rotation player at forward in Dallas whose career exploded after he was traded in February 1989 to the Indiana Pacers with a second-round pick in 1990 in exchange for Herb Williams.

With the Pacers, Schrempf was a two-time Sixth Man of the Year winner.

In November 1993, Schrempf was dealt to the Seattle SuperSonics for Derrick McKey and Gerald Paddio and became a full-fledged star, earning All-NBA honors in 1994-95.

In August 1999, Schrempf signed as a free agent with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he played his final two seasons before retiring in 2001.

In 16 NBA campaigns, Schrempf averaged 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 29.6 minutes per game, shooting .491/.384/.803.

He was an assistant coach for the SuperSonics for a short time in the early 21st century and does a great deal of charity work in the Seattle area.
