Analysis

Daniel Ochefu and the Villanova Wildcats did the unthinkable during the Elite Eight. Not only did Villanova upset the No. 1 seed Kansas Jayhawks, but behind Ochefu’s defensive versatility, it held Perry Ellis to just four points in 34 minutes.

According to Reuben Frank of CSN Philly, Villanova head coach Jay Wright singled Ochefu out as the versatile offensive contributor who makes the offense flow.

"“We use him against the press, put the ball in his hands against the press, he throws back-door passes,” Wright said Friday. “He’s a great passer and he loves it. He doesn’t need to score, but he can and he likes it.”"

Most of what Ochefu does won’t show up in the box score, but that doesn’t make him any less legitimate of an NBA prospect.

Ochefu has the physical tools to be a center in the NBA at a muscular and athletic 6’11” and 245 pounds with a 7’3″ wingspan. He’s a selfless contributor who will crash the offensive boards and facilitate for his teammates without demanding scoring opportunities.

Ochefu is 22, but his constant improvement is a telling sign that he’s nowhere near finished improving.

Ochefu moves well without the ball, sets hard screens, dives hard off of the pick-and-roll, and defends multiple positions. He’s becoming more consistent in his effort on the offensive and defensive glass, and has genuine potential as a rim protector.

Ochefu will likely spend some time in the D-League, but he will receive an opportunity to play in the NBA.
