6. What would be the worst situation for this team, Kevin Durant leaving or Russell Westbrook?

Eberley: The worst situation would be both leaving in the next two seasons. A possibility that’s incredibly likely if they don’t win the title in the next two seasons.

Bourguet: Durant. First of all, Durant would be leaving first, which would jeopardize Westbrook staying the following year when he gets his chance, and that could ultimately leave the Thunder with nothing. If Durant stays this summer, I have a hard time believing Westbrook will want to play anywhere else when it’s his turn for free agency.

We should also note, however, that if Durant does what many people think he will do and takes a one-year max deal so he can make even more money next summer, that gives he and Westbrook the flexibility to hit free agency and sign max contracts at the same time. In that nightmarish scenario for OKC, the dynamic duo could easily stay together while joining another franchise.

Hanneke: I mean, if one leaves it’d be a pretty safe bet to assume the other would follow suit. At this point, they have a brotherly relationship, and I don’t see one bailing on the other. So, the answer to the question is “yes.”

Woods: Durant leaving would be far worse for all the reasons I just stated. Westbrook would be impossible to replace individually, but it would be easier (not easy, but easier) to replace what Westbrook does than what Durant does.
