23. Magic’s Baby Skyhook

Game 4 of the 1987 NBA Finals marked the final high-water point for the Big Three Era of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish. Boston trailed in the series 2-1 and built a 16-point lead at home in Game 4.

Boston would lead 103-95 with less than four minutes to play.  Magic Johnson and the Lakers took a 104-103 lead before Bird buried a 3-pointer right in front of Pat Riley and the Lakers’ bench. The Lakers would have one more shot. Johnson got the inbounds pass, dribbled past McHale, drove to the key and lofted a hook shot just past the outstretched fingers of McHale and Parish. The Lakers led 107-106.

Boston’s final hope for victory came off the hands of Bird, whose jumper at the buzzer rimmed out high.
