5. Banner 17 – “Anything’s Possible!”

The 2008 NBA Finals marked a return to the heydays of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry from the 1980s. The Phil Jackson-coached Lakers were led by Kobe Bryant. The Celtics had their 21st century Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. They were joined by Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins. That starting five would never lose a playoff series.

Boston won the first two games at home before the Lakers took Game 3. Boston would pull off the largest playoff comeback in history by erasing a 24-point deficit in Game 4. The series returned to Boston for Game 6 in what would be become a coronation for Garnett, Pierce and Company. Boston destroyed Los Angeles 131-92.

The crowd began celebrating at halftime. When it was all over, Garnett would famously exclaim: “Anything is possible. Anything is possible!” For one series, it was.
