12. Triple-OT Game 5 Thriller At the Garden

The Celtics won the 1976 NBA title but not before winning perhaps the greatest NBA finals game in history. Game 5 was a triple-overtime affair played on Friday, June 4 in Boston won by the Celtics 128-126. It was an emotionally and physically draining affair for the players and anyone who watched it.

In the second overtime, Phoenix led by one point with four seconds to play. John Havlicek raced up the floor and banked a 15-footer that filled the Garden parquet with fans. One second was put back on the clock. Paul Westphal called for a timeout he knew his team did not have. The ensuing technical stretched Boston’s lead to two points, but allowed Phoenix to inbound the ball from midcourt.

Gar Heard buried a jumper at the buzzer to send the game into its third overtime. The Celtics would win Game 6, and their lucky 13th title, two days later.
