14. “Bird to D.J. D.J. lays it up and in.”

Larry Bird once said Dennis Johnson was the best teammate he ever had. D.J. is often overlooked when recounting the glory days of the 1980s Celtics. But his role on the championship teams of 1984 and ’86 cannot be overstated.

Johnson was traded to Boston from Phoenix after the 1983 season. He guarded Magic Johnson in the last four games of the ’84 finals, scoring 20 or more points in each game. And it was Dennis Johnson who was there, racing toward the basket for the easy lay-in, after Larry Bird stole the ball from Isiah Thomas in the Game 5 of 1987 Eastern Conference finals.

Johnson died in 2007 and was elected to the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
