17. Henderson’s Swipe

The Celtics have had three signature in-game “steals” in their history. Gerald Henderson’s historic theft came against the Lakers in Game 2 of the NBA finals on May 31, 1984.

The Lakers had won Game 1 in Boston and led 113-111 at the Garden. With 18 seconds to play, Henderson picked off a pass from James Worthy and raced in for a game-tying layup. In a rare mental freeze, Magic Johnson would take the inbound pass and dribble out the clock to allow overtime.

The Celtics would win in overtime 124-121 and eventually take the series in seven games. “To be honest, if it wasn’t for that steal, we probably would have been swept,” said Larry Bird.
