Every NBA Team’s Signature Season
By Duncan Smith
Atlanta Hawks, 1986-87
Record: 57-25
Lost in Eastern Conference semifinals
With all due respect to last year’s Eastern Conference top seed squad, the 1986-87 Atlanta Hawks were the signature of this franchise. They went 57-25 and were led by Dominique Wilkins at the height of his powers.
Wilkins averaged 29 points per game to go with 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists, and was named to the second team All-NBA roster. In addition to Wilkins making the second team, team president and general manager Stan Kasten was named Executive of the Year in his first year in the position of president.
The roster was rounded out by current NBA head coaches Doc Rivers (of the Los Angeles Clippers) and Randy Wittman (of the Washington Wizards).

The Hawks were coached by Mike Fratello, and finished first in the Central Division. They beat the Indiana Pacers 3-1 in the first round, but ran headlong into the Detroit Pistons as the Bad Boy era was just beginning to take hold, and were defeated in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
