Analysis

A Round of 64 exit wasn’t the desired result, but the Oregon State Beavers’ 2016 NCAA Tournament was its first since 1990. The point guards for the 1990 and 2016 teams share the same name, with the first being NBA legend Gary Payton, and the other his son, Gary Payton II.

Payton II’s collegiate career came to a close with a loss, but he made quite the statement against the VCU Rams.

It wasn’t the easiest game for Payton, but he overcame a strong defensive team to score 19 efficient points. He also dished out four assists to just one turnover, pulled down six rebounds, and came up with six steals.

The team result was disappointing, but Payton II had a game that should help his draft stock.

Payton has the physical profile to be a physically overwhelming point guard in the NBA at just under 6’3″ with a near 6’7″ wingspan and a solid 184-pound frame. He’s an excellent athlete who has the defensive potential and court vision that scouts love, but there are red flags in the form of his age and subpar jump shot.

More hoops habit: Where does Gary Payton II rank amongst the Top 30 prospects in the 2016 NBA Draft?

Payton would’ve done more for his draft stock had he made some shots from beyond the arc, but he played well enough to garner national attention.
