Analysis
In 2014-15, Maryland Terrapins small forward Jake Layman worked his way onto the first-round bubble. His draft stock wasn’t set in stone, but he’d done enough to intrigue the masses and emerge as one of the Top 30 prospects in the country.
Layman has regressed by way of his draft stock, but his Round of 64 performance should help restore his status as a player with the tools to have a long and profitable NBA career.
Layman didn’t offer much beyond his scoring, but he shot the lights out and saved Maryland from an upset threat. He scored 27 points on shooting marks of 7-of-11 from the field, 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
Every one of those numbers helps to identify Layman’s appeal as a prospect.
Layman is a smooth athlete who’s explosive at the rim and lethal from beyond the arc. He shot 40.6 percent from distance leading up to the NCAA Tournament, and lit the Round of 64 up with his marksmanship and ability to attack the rim and draw contact.
Layman is big, athletic, a great shooter, and a solid defender. With more performances like this, he’ll get drafted.
