The Detroit Pistons are building the future of the organization around the upside of 22-year-old center Andre Drummond. After an extended period of time during which Drummond regressed, he’s back to justifying the faith Stan Van Gundy has placed in him.
At 22 years old, Drummond is already the single most dominant rebounding force in the NBA.
Drummond’s scoring average dipped to 14.8 points in January, and 15.1 points in February. Thus, it was a pleasure for Pistons fans to see Drummond open this past week with 21 points and 16 rebounds on 10-of-20 shooting in a loss to the New York Knicks.
After following that performance up with 14 points and 18 rebounds against the Portland Trail Blazers, Drummond dropped 25 points and 17 boards during a win over the Dallas Mavericks.
If Drummond is able to re-emerge as a scoring threat, the Pistons should be able to make the playoffs. Detroit is 25-17 when Drummond scores at least 15 points, and falls to 8-14 when he fails to.
That’s as telling a statistic as you’re going to find about a player’s value.
