9. Points in the Paint

Owning the painted area is becoming a lost art in the NBA today with the era of three-point shooting that the Warriors are leading. Nevertheless, the paint is still a crucial part in controlling a basketball game.

The Spurs have the eye-test advantage when the two near 7-footers in LaMarcus Aldridge and Tim Duncan take the floor, but with the Warriors’ style of play (three-pointer or layup), they actually rank higher than the Spurs in terms of points in the paint.

The Warriors are sixth with 45.4 per game and the Spurs rank 10th with 44.2. As was stated earlier, the Spurs have the more old-school approach of just dumping the ball down to their bigs and letting them go to work whereas the Warriors thrive off taking advantage of bad closeouts that result in Curry floaters.

It’s safe to say that whatever team has the advantage in scoring in the paint will likely be on the winning side of things. Considering the way these two team do this, it will be a contrast of styles that will be intriguing to watch. The Spurs have future Hall of Famer Duncan to help enforce this mindset, which will play well for them.
