20. Shelvin Mack

It’s amazing what some players in this league are able to do when they’re given a chance on the right team. How else do we describe Shelvin Mack‘s immediate transformation from a rarely used reserve with the Atlanta Hawks to the starting point guard for the Utah Jazz?

To be fair, Mack didn’t deserve minutes over Jeff Teague or Dennis Schroder in Atlanta, and the only reason he’s ascended to the starting job is Utah’s backcourt is so injury-depleted. The Jazz have gone 1-4 in the (small sample size alert) five games Mack has suited up for, and once Dante Exum and Alec Burks return healthy, Mack’s place in the rotation becomes uncertain.

But we can’t ignore the raw numbers for the time being, with Mack jumping from 3.9 points and 1.6 assists in 7.5 minutes per game with the Hawks this season (in 24 appearances) to 13.0 points and 2.8 assists in 28 minutes per game in his first five games with the Jazz. Perhaps he could be on to something.
