Boston Celtics: 5 Players To Consider For Final Roster Spot
By Jon Shames
4.) Jonathan Holmes
Jonathan Holmes is far from a household name, but Celtics fans who watched the team in Summer League knows how effective the former University of Texas star can be, even if he doesn’t look pretty doing it.
In eight appearances with Boston’s Summer League squad, Holmes averaged 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 0.75 blocks in just 20.2 minutes per game. He shot 48 percent from the field, and an impressive 46.4 percent from three-point range. He played excellent defense, and was rewarded for his strong play on both ends in the form of seven starts.
This came after Holmes went undrafted, which came as a surprise. Holmes has the body and skill to be an NBA player, but he is a bit of a 3-4 ‘tweener, which has been a major red flag for many teams over the years, despite the success of players like Draymond Green and of course, Jae Crowder.
Still, Holmes looked good in the Celtics’ green and white, and Stevens was certainly a fan of the 23-year-old forward. The Celtics, in years past, have filled their midseason roster vacancies with D-League players, among them Chris Johnson, Vander Blue, and Jarvis Varnado. If that is the direction the team decides to go in this year, Holmes should be at the top of the list.
