5. Miami Heat

If you’re a veteran player who has lost a step athletically, but you still know how to contribute, the Miami Heat are the team for you. Built around physical defense and dominant rim protection, Miami is a measure of offensive consistency away from contending.

Joe Johnson may not be the missing piece, but he’d certainly fill a void for a team that’s deep enough to contend.

The 32-25 Heat can hold their own against any team in the NBA, as evidenced by a stellar game against the Golden State Warriors. What Miami lacks is consistency along the 3-point line, and that’s something that Johnson can provide.

Converting 37.1 percent of his 3-point field goal attempts overall, and 38.9 percent in catch-and-shoot situations, Johnson can help a Heat team that ranks dead last in 3-point field goal percentage.

The hurdle in Miami would be something of a logjam at the 2 and 3 spots. Luol Deng and Justise Winslow spend time at small forward, and Gerald Green has been a solid backup to Dwyane Wade at shooting guard.

Given Green’s sharp decline in efficiency, however, Johnson could usurp him in the rotation and provide valuable minutes to a team that’s close to contending.
