The Miami Heat suffered another blow to their backcourt, as backup point guard Beno Udrih has been lost for the season to a foot injury that requires surgery.

The Miami Heat have been hit hard by the injury bug all season, and have been hit once again this week. After losing Chris Bosh during All-Star weekend indefinitely with another blood clot scare, the Heat will now be without another rotation player.

This time it was Beno Udrih succumbing to an injury, as he will be out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury that will require surgery.

Udrih originally hurt his left foot in Monday night’s victory over the Indiana Pacers. X-Rays came back negative, but Udrih underwent further tests, taking an MRI on Tuesday to figure out what exactly he was dealing with. Udrih was originally listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, as they awaited the MRI results.

The results were not good, as Udrih was announced out for the game less than three hours later. Then, just over five hours after that, it was revealed that Udrih will be undergoing surgery on his left foot, which was first reported by The Vertical on Yahoo, and confirmed by Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

More from Miami Heat

With Udrih sidelined, the Heat’s backcourt is severely shorthanded. He is the second guard to go down this month for an extended period of time, as combo guard Tyler Johnson was also lost earlier in February. There is a chance that Johnson can return from his shoulder surgery at some point, but like Udrih, he is probably out for the remainder of the season.

Couple those injuries with Bosh being sidelined, and the Heat have only 10 healthy players currently available to them.

Of those 10, only one–Goran Dragic–is a true point guard. The Heat had acquired some insurance in the backcourt in Brian Roberts in a three-team deal with the Charlotte Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies. But, with an opportunity to get under the luxury tax line, the Heat shipped him out hours after his first practice with the team to the Portand Trail Blazers.

With no other options to turn to, rookie Josh Richardson will be asked to play more minutes. He is the only healthy guard the Heat have coming off the bench currently. He will be the quasi-backup point guard, but expect Dragic and Dwyane Wade to play major minutes and run the offense for a majority of the game.

The Heat do have two open roster spots, so there is a chance that they will sign someone so that they at least have some depth on the roster. There is no way that they can make it through the remainder of the regular season with 10 players, especially with some being as big of health risks as they are.

Udrih may not have put up gaudy numbers, but he was an important part of the Heat’s rotation. It is not easy, especially after the trade deadline, to acquire a high-quality backup point guard. The Heat will have to try though, as they are on their last legs in terms of guard depth.
