2002 The Indiana Pacers

2002 is a toughy, on one hand the Celtics dealing Joe Johnson to Phoenix appears the easy choice. On the other, the man formerly known as Ron Artest going to Indiana had far more historic relevance. No Malice at Palace without Metta World Peace. Artest also won his Defensive Player of the Year award as a Pacer.

The Deal

The Pacers acquired Artest, Ron Mercer, Brad Miller, and Kevin Ollie. The Chicago Bulls in turn received Travis Best, Norm Richardson, Jalen Rose, and a second-round pick.

The Pacers clearly won the deal, despite Artest’s blaring flaws he was a hell of a two way player. Rose performed admirably with the Bulls during his two year stint but he’s no front man and the Bulls weren’t going anywhere. Rose was dealt to the Toronto Raptors in 2003 and he stayed there long enough to witness the 81 point thrashing courtesy of Kobe Bryant in 2006.
