The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the more active players on the buyout market in the past few seasons. With a limited amount of ammo to unload at the trade deadline, the Mavs have used a different method of improving by signing players who they normally would not be able to trade for.

Over the summer the Mavs, who were already tight on money after giving Wesley Matthews a max deal, signed Deron Williams to a two-year, $10 million deal after his $25 million contract was bought out. Without the buyout, there was no way the Mavs would have ever been able to trade for him an they certainly would not have wanted to trade for such a big contract.

In 2014-15, Amar’e Stoudemire was bought out with $23.4 million remaining on his contract, allowing the Mavs to dive in and sign him for the veteran’s minimum, a steal for them at the time since they were one of the better teams in the West.

If the Mavs opt to stand pat at the trade deadline, expect them to be very active once bought out players start hitting the market. Oftentimes, it is possible to get a high caliber player for a cheaper price, with examples being the Mavs’ recent pickups mentioned above.

Let’s take a deeper look at some possible options.
