Channing Frye

The Orlando Magic tipped off trade deadline season for dealing Tobias Harris to Detroit in exchange for Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova.

ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that it might not be the only deal the Magic make before the deadline and that Channing Frye is being shopped by the Magic front office.

More from Hoops Habit

Frye’s value is based upon his shooting skills for his size. Frye is shooting 39.7 percent on three-pointers this season and is a career 38.7 percent shooter from downtown. Frye can play both power forward and center positions, which makes him ideal for the Clippers.

The Clippers have shown that their offense doesn’t fall off much without Blake Griffin and most of this is due to increased spacing for the offense to flow freely. That spacing just isn’t available with Griffin and DeAndre Jordan clogging up the lanes on offense.

Enter Channing Frye.

Frye could help the Clippers deal with Griffin’s absence and allow the Clippers to run an offense with better spacing. Frye would make an ideal partner to play with Griffin or Jordan, allowing both of them to dominate the paint and boards while Frye provides a deadly threat from the outside.

Much has been said about the Clippers playing Jordan at crunch time when opponents can hack him and send him to the free throw line to stall the Clippers’ offense. Frye could be an alternative to play in these moments that Cole Aldrich might not be capable of.

Some of Frye’s best days were spent with Goran Dragic and the Phoenix Suns, where Frye’s ability to play the pick-and-pop with a point guard who can create for himself or others was a vital cog of their offense. Pairing Frye with Chris Paul could make for an even more potent combination.

Frye would simply fill a couple holes that the Clippers have and allow their pieces on their roster to maximize their talents.
