Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have had one of the most dominant frontcourts in the game in recent history. Marc Gasol is out with a broken right foot and could miss the remainder of the season, the Commercial Appeal’s Ronald Tillery reports. The Grizzlies are much better if Gasol can return before the playoffs, but they need to add a center.

With the threat of Gasol missing an extended period of time, the Grizzlies should target Brook Lopez or Al Horford as the trade deadline approaches. Current big men Ryan Hollins and Brandan Wright (who may be set to return after the All-Star Break) likely won’t be able to make up for Gasol’s loss of production or leadership. Lopez or Horford would be able to step in as a two-way center and pick up the production.

  • If the Grizzlies do make a move for a center, they may have to part with the depth that they have on the wings. Horford should be the ideal candidate as an expiring contract. He’d help the Grizzlies this year and would allow them to address other needs in the offseason. That differs from Lopez, who is signed through the 2017-18 season.

The only other option for the Grizzlies is to consider having a fire sale and go into full rebuilding mode. Point guard Mike Conley is an expiring contract and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Power forward Zach Randolph is signed through next season and would likely be traded, too.

Then there are the expiring contracts of Jeff Green, Matt Barnes, Courtney Lee and Mario Chalmers. The elite defender Tony Allen could bring in a nice return for the Grizzlies. There are plenty of options for Memphis, who is currently in fifth place in the Western Conference standings.

If the Grizzlies believe they can compete in the playoffs without Gasol, they may try to acquire a top, two-way center. If they don’t think they can compete, they may look to trade everyone and rebuild through trading and the offseason, since they have the pieces to excel in a rebuild.
