5. Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2015-16 NBA regular season. Despite the glaring inconsistency of both Wesley Matthews and Chandler Parsons, Rick Carlisle has Dallas at 29-26 entering the All-Star Break.

The question is, will Donnie Nelson and the Mavericks pull the trigger on a trade to become more realistic championship contenders?

Zaza Pachulia has been a revelation in 2015-16, but he lacks the star power that Dallas needs to round out its rotation. So long as Matthews fails to create within the 3-point line and Parsons battles general inconsistency, the Mavericks will have a limited ceiling.

With Howard in the mix, however, Dallas would have a roster that better competes with the best in the Western Conference.

Parsons recently told Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports that he will recruit Howard once the 30-year-old becomes a free agent in 2016. It’s not guaranteed that Howard will opt out of his current contract, but Adrian Wojnarowski’s previously alluded to report stated that he will.

The question is, would Dallas risk trading for Howard when Parsons has made it clear that he and the team will pursue the three-time Defensive Player of the Year in free agency?
