A year ago, the general consensus about French wing Timothe Luwawu was that he had the size and athleticism to play in the NBA, but lacked the necessary skill level. A season later, he’s being compared to fellow Frenchman and current Charlotte Hornets starter Nicolas Batum.

It may seem generic, but it’s a fitting comparison given the vast similarities between the two players.

Athletically, Luwawu has an advantage over most opponents with his explosive leaping ability and strong frame. This enables him to finish through contact and make consistent appearances on highlight reels with his posterizations and throw-downs.

The most significant development in Luwawu’s game, however, has nothing to do with his athleticism; it’s his ability to facilitate the offense.

As an explosive athlete who can attack in transition, defend multiple positions, and set the table, Batum becomes a very easy comparison to make. The ultimate upside likening, however, is reigning Finals MVP and accomplished wing Andre Iguodala.

As Luwawu’s body fills out, perfecting his defensive footwork and continuing to improve as a shooter could bring him to star heights.
