4. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

Statistically speaking, Russell Westbrook is on pace to complete one of the most prolific seasons in NBA history. He’s racking up points, assists, and steals at elite levels, and is consistently rebounding at a level that deserves a similar distinction for a point guard.

Based on the numbers, one of the Association’s resident triple-double machines is putting forth a season for the ages.

Westbrook’s current averages put him in a historically significant position. He’s on pace to be the first player to average at least 24.0 points and 10.0 assists since Michael Adams in 1990-91, Tiny Archibald in 1972-73, and Oscar Robertson in 1966-67.

Per Basketball-Reference.com, Westbrook is also on pace to be the first player to average at least 24.0 points, 10.0 assists, and 7.5 rebounds since Robertson in 1965-66.

Beyond the basic numbers, Westbrook is No. 3 in the NBA in both Win Shares and Usage Rate. He’s embraced the need to play a more selfless style, and that sacrifice has played a major role in the Oklahoma City Thunder going 28-6 since December 3.

Westbrook is as legitimate an MVP candidate as they come. If he continues racking up triple-doubles, he may be the player who catches Stephen Curry.
