Redrafting The 1st Round Of The 2014 NBA Draft
21. Oklahoma City Thunder: Dwight Powell, Stanford
Original selection: 45th by the Charlotte Hornets (later traded to Cleveland, then traded to Dallas)
2015-16 selections: 6.7 PPG 4.7 RPG 0.4 BPG 17.23 PER
Dwight Powell had a productive senior season at Stanford, walking away with All-Pac-12 first team honors for the second time, Pac-12 Scholar of the Year, and a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention.
With those awards, it’s hard to realize that Powell wasn’t at least an early second-round selection, but the mindset of NBA teams has changed to drafting the young prospects with upside over the four-year, matured players.
Once Powell was able to establish playing time in Dallas, his worth came to the forefront. He has put up respectable numbers this season and has burst on to the scene as one of the steals in last year’s draft.
The Thunder are deep in the frontcourt positions, but it would be hard to pass on Powell after seeing his production when he is given the playing time.
