Redrafting The 1st Round Of The 2014 NBA Draft
15. Atlanta Hawks: Gary Harris, Michigan State
Original selection: 19th by the Chicago Bulls (later traded to the Denver Nuggets)
2015-16 statistics: 11.1 PPG 2.9 RPG 1.7 APG 11.74 PER
Coming out of Michigan State coached by Tom Izzo, Gary Harris was looked at as being a young player who had the potential to be a nice fit next to an established guard in the NBA. When the Nuggets traded for him, it could be assumed that Ty Lawson could help create scoring opportunities for Harris.
Unfortunately, playing time was scarce for Harris and he averaged 13.1 minutes per game his rookie season.
Heading into his sophomore season in the NBA, Harris was going to battle veteran Randy Foye for the starting shooting guard role, and he ended up doing just that. His minutes have skyrocketed to 30.6 per game and his production took an obvious increase in the process.
For the Hawks situation, the Tim Hardaway Jr. project hasn’t gone as planned, so if they had Harris to back up Kyle Korver, they’d be sitting a lot prettier in frontcourt depth.
