Redrafting The 1st Round Of The 2014 NBA Draft
13. Minnesota Timberwolves: Zach LaVine, UCLA
Original selection: 13th by the Minnesota Timberwolves
2015-16 statistics: 12.8 PPG 3.2 APG 2.9 RPG 14.95 PER
This was another pick that went exactly the same in the actual draft and for Minnesota, it’s been a good thing. Zach LaVine was a very raw prospect, declaring for the draft after his freshman year at UCLA. There were concerns about his lack of outside shooting, but his athleticism and upside was too good for Minnesota to pass on.
The Timberwolves went through a stage of trying to make LaVine adapt to playing point guard, but he hasn’t shown that he is able to facilitate an NBA offense as of yet. He has been able to cut down on his turnovers from his rookie season, and also increase his scoring average which indicates his feel for the game continues to improve.
Putting LaVine back in the point guard experiment doesn’t necessarily have to be over for good.
Its’ no secret that Minnesota is one of the teams with the brightest future filled with youth. LaVine, Andrew Wiggins, and Karl-Anthony Towns could make them consistent playoff contenders in the next couple of years, but that process will continue to take time.
